Asset Management Software Eliminates Costly Mistakes

Enterprise and Strategic Asset Management is a business process, that when measured correctly, recovers significant financial savings. Like any business process, a succesful asset management plan hinges on the selection of highly specified key performance indicators (KPIs). These KPIs must be measurable and, of course, accurately reported.

The following three mistakes are costly and common. They often result in a failed attempt to implement an asset management system, which of course means a significant loss in savings. 

Mistake 1:  Failure to Centralize Asset Management.

Lack of centralization is the single most costly mistake a business can make.  Maintaining separate databases has implicit costs.  Aside from the labor costs of keeping this database updated, we have found numerous companies have duplicated the asset management process throughout the company.  This duplication is more expensive if the company is spread out across multiple locations in cities. Every business process has both a cost-in-labor and a cost-in-time. Every inventory only represents those items within the departmental control. Having this process duplicated, multiplies this cost each time a process is repeated.  Often these labor hours go unmeasured or rolled into other labor costs which hide the true dollar amount.

Failure to centralize the asset management process causes the business to expend capital resources frivolously. When equipment is leased, this lack of centralization leads to added costs when leased items are lost or improperly tracked.

Mistake 2:  Failure to Incorporate Asset Management into the Workflow.

The second costly mistake a business can make is to allow the asset management database to become stale. The most accurate databases are those that are updated frequently. If a database reflects the current status of company equipment, it is vital that this database be updated when this equipment is moved. The only way to do this is to enable asset management as part of the normal facilities or IT management workflow.  The most effective asset delivery process is illustrated by UPS or Fedex as they deliver packages. By using a barcode scanner and scanning the barcode label of the package, it is immediately synched back to the server, which allows the user to have accurate information on the location of the package.  As equipment is being moved or delivered, it needs to be tracked. The simplest approach is to scan the barcode on the equipment, and scan the current location.  Most RFID implementations do this automatically, as they read the RFID tag and note the current location.  E-ISG's software has an audit tool used when equipment is relocated. The ideal asset management database is highly transactional, and is updated frequently. The more transactional the database, the more accurate it is, and the less costly to maintain.

Failure to manage assets in a workflow means that your database becomes stale and out of date. This will ultimately require an audit of in all items in your inventory, not just those that are out-of-date. Obviously, the larger the required audit, the longer and more labor intensive this audit becomes.

Mistake 3:  Failure to Make Asset Management a Key Business Process.

When businesses fail to treat Asset Management as a key business process, they all but guarantee a financial loss.  Key business processes require planning and coordination, which also require accountability. This mistake is so costly because a business will purchase an asset management solution to centralize the database, incorporate it into IT management, but will not stress the utilization of the process.  They have purchased the tool, but provided no training and have not incorporated into the corporate culture.  Without training and proper analysis of the problem that an asset management solution is supposed to solve, often expensive tools are later abandoned as tools that are hard to use will not be used.

Each point in the process creates savings for the organization. In our case study, the cost saving was significant due to reduction of labor costs, the elimination of inventory activity due to the transactional process, and the creation of donation tax write-offs from retired assets. In adopting the lease tracking process, the elimination of lost items on a lease schedule was a significant cost saving (far greater than the fee paid to E-ISG). By building in ROI immediately into the process, it is easy to save 30% of the asset budget per year, and have that savings directed towards strengthening the asset process. It is essential, in difficult economic times to make every expense worth the investment. In this case, a startup cost of a centralized asset management system and proper adoption of said system can yield immediate savings. It is worth the effort.

WMS: Opening Dynamics GP Distribution Modules to Barcode Scanning

There might be two approaches to Warehouse Management System selection and implementation.  First approach is to pick special software application and then decide on how to integrate it with your Corporate ERP system.  And second approach is when you look at the features, available in your ERP and open them for Barcoding.  If you are reading these lines we expect that your ERP application is Microsoft Dynamics GP, formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics.  GP has so-called Distribution set of modules, including Sales Order Processing, Purchase Order Processing, Inventory Control, Bill of Materials, where such Warehouse Management System features, as Sales Order Fulfillment, Merchandise Restocking, Inventory Quantity adjustments and transfers are already available, however you need WMS enabler:

1. Barcoding and Dynamics GP screens.  Technically Barcode scanner is similar to keyboard.  If you have tiny laptop or netbook computer with barcode scanner attached, if you open Dynamics GP form, such as Sales Transaction Entry, pull the order to be allocated, place the cursor on the item line and enter quantity – when popup screen opens, where it suggest you to select lot number – now you can scan the lot number which you decide to allocate – barcode scanner will do the job for you.  Similar approach will work with restocking and inventory transactions.  Likely the reaction from your side will be – wait a minute – we cannot expect our Warehouse workers to know all the Dynamics GP screens and they cannot combine laptop keyboard with barcode scanning.  You are right – WMS works in real time or in batch mode and it prepares the document in the memory of your scanner and then transmits it to Dynamics GP automatically

2. WMS extension to Great Plains.  The system, described in the last sentence of the previous paragraph works directly with GP transactions, master records (inventory item, customer) and it doesn't require you to purchase additional standalone external Warehouse Management application – all the WMS logic is done directly in Great Plains Dynamics – you just need WMS extension

3. Warehouse Management System implementation.  Each Retail, Wholesale, Logistics, Distribution, Light Manufacturing business is unique and it has its own procedures and requirements.  If you think that in your case you need some custom logic to classical WMS – this is normal and your Dynamics GP WMS partner or ISV should go ahead and help you with modifications

4. How To Play Psp Games Online

Ever since I start playing games on my PSP, it is really great to have played so many games. And I also play online games

as well on my personal computer and I start to wonder how I can play PSP games online as well. I had seen new games launched which is capable of playing online. Like playing PC games online, it gives a great sense of victory when I have beaten others online. My neighborhood is a pretty boring one with not much people I came across plays online games and not to mention knowing how to play PSP games online.

It set me on a journey to learn how to setup my personal
PSP for online gaming. It’s pretty simple after you have figured out how every step goes and anyone can do it within a few steps. I did the system configuration using a LINKSYS WRT54G router.

The first step, you will need to download and install KAI Download the installation file according to the type of Operating System you are using.

Once you have installed the program, you need to create XTag You need to enter your information to create this XTag that will use to identify you online.

To begin, [Start Menu] >> [All Program] >> [Xlink KAI Evolution 7], run your Kai Configuration Tool which you had just installed. From the program user interface, select Java as “Optional”, you do not need it. Next, from the program, “Enable PAT” and “Lauch UI” and enter your XTag information. To finish off, uncheck “Lauch Engine”

Next, before you continue further you will need to download the LINKSYS firmware

From your window explorer, login into your router configuration and proceed to “Administration” >> “Firmware Upgrade” and select the firmware you had previously download and click “Update”. After you had updated your router firmware, login to your router configuration again and “Disable your Wireless” >> “MAC Filter”. And next you continue with “Administration” >> “Management” and make sure your auto login is enabled and enter your XTag.

Continue from the same menu, “Interface” input the following;

br0 – for Xbox and PSP
eth2 – for PSP only on Linksys WRT54G 1.0 and 1.1 routers
eth1 – for PSP only on Linksys WRT56G 2.0 and 2.2 routers

Proceed to “Administration” >> “Kaid” and click start “Kaid”. Next, from the “Start” menu run “XLink KAI” and proceed to “Menu” >> “Settings”. From the program interface specify the IP address of your router. Once you have done that, enter the XTag information which you had previously signup.

The final step, start the connection and log-in into the PSP arena and chose your battle. From your PSP console, proceed to Multiplayer mode and host a game or join into other’s game. Lastly from your router configuration window, proceed to “administrator” >> “Kaid” and click “Scan PSP”.

So just follow the steps I mentioned above and you can now play games online and select you own battlegrounds to compete. Enjoy your online games as you have completed the setup. Nothing comes better than a sweet victory…
